Cloudy pool water in Bali is a frustrating problem that can appear suddenly even in a well-maintained pool. Unlike a green pool, cloudy water is not always caused by algae — it can result from several different factors including poor filtration, chemical imbalance, high calcium hardness, sunscreen and body oils from swimmers, or fine particles suspended after heavy rain. Identifying the root cause of cloudy water is essential for applying the right treatment and preventing the problem from recurring. The most common cause of cloudy pool water in Bali is poor water chemistry, particularly high pH combined with insufficient chlorine. When pH rises above 7.8, chlorine becomes less effective — as much as 80% of the available chlorine becomes inactive. This allows bacteria and fine organic particles to accumulate, causing the water to turn hazy. Pools in Bali are particularly susceptible to pH rise after heavy rain because rainwater in tropical regions is slightly acidic initially but triggers chemical reactions in the pool water that can push pH up over the following 12–24 hours. Filtration issues are another frequent cause of cloudy water. A dirty or clogged sand filter cannot remove fine particles effectively, allowing them to remain suspended in the water. If your pool pump is not running for enough hours per day — ideally 8–12 hours in Bali's climate — the water does not cycle through the filter sufficiently. Old or degraded filter media also loses its effectiveness and may need replacement, typically every 3–5 years for silica sand filters.
